5 Benefits of Coffee Scrubs for the skin

Coffee scrub

We all know that exfoliating our skin is an important part of any beauty regime. Our skin is constantly shedding dead skin cells and generating new ones. When dead skin cells pile up on the surface of our skin, it can make our skin appear dull and feel rough. The dead skin cells can clog pores and also act as a barrier that stops products from properly penetrating the skin. Sometimes our body is slow at shedding dead skin cells because this natural exfoliation process (referred to as ‘desquamation’) slows down as we age.

As a Nutritionist and Beauty Therapist who makes my own skincare products from food, I have found that one of the best ingredients to use in scrubs is coffee. Using a face and body scrub once a week will help to resurface the skin and encourage skin rejuvenation.

The benefits of coffee scrubs for the skin are:

  • Coffee is high in antioxidants
  • It is very stimulating
  • It is a great natural exfoliator that buffs away dead skin cells
  • It has the same pH as the skin which means that it won’t strip the skin of it’s natural oils
  • The caffeine in the coffee has a toning and tightening effect on the skin

COFFEE BODY SCRUB RECIPE

Body scrubs are great because they increase circulation, improve blood flow and improve overall skin texture.

Mix together:

  • ½ cup of coffee grounds
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • ¾ cup of coconut oil
  • A few drops of your favourite essential oil

Apply the mixture in circular motions all over your body from the décolletage down and then rise off with warm water.

The coconut oil is nourishing and lubricates the skin and also contains lauric acid, which has antibacterial properties. The sugar contains glycolic acid, which is an alpha-hydroxy acid that works to dissolve the lipids that hold dead skin cells together.

COFFEE FACE SCRUB RECIPE

Mix 1 teaspoon of coffee with 2 teaspoons of yoghurt and rub the mixture in gentle circular movements around the face and neck. You could also add sugar to this mixture if you wish.

The lactic acid in the yoghurt helps to soften the skin and acts as a chemical exfoliant. Yoghurt also contains zinc, which helps to heal blemishes.
